Brighton submits a winning law team to this year’s national CEDR competition
Well done to a group of law students, who have proven their excellence by securing a spot in this year’s prestigious national CEDR (Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution) competition.
During their first semester, 44 students from across our law degrees participated in the university’s annual negotiation competition to determine who would go forward to represent Brighton at the national and international competitions.
Four pairs of finalists showcased their negotiation prowess in front of judge Lydia Goodman, a solicitor from the renowned law firm DMH Stallard, and competition organizer Gillian Keenan.
Celebrating the Winners
Victoria Law and Angelo Galluzzo emerged victorious, earning a week’s work experience at DMH Stallard, a valuable step toward their qualifying work experience as future lawyers. They also secured their place in the national CEDR competition. Runners-up Harry Morris and Tonphai Dinnes were commended for their impressive performance.
Reflecting on the event, Lydia Goodman says:
“Working with the University of Brighton is always a pleasure, and the standard of negotiation this year has been the highest I’ve seen in years. It’s inspiring to witness the dedication and commitment of these talented students.”
About the CEDR Competition
The annual CEDR negotiation competition seeks to identify the top student negotiators from England and Wales to represent their nations at the International Negotiation Competition Final in 2025. With over 60 universities competing, it is a highly challenging and rewarding experience for participants.
The Brighton competition begins each academic year with a series of evening workshops, followed by elimination rounds that determine the finalists. Participants tackle detailed case studies across various legal areas, including family, commercial, and contract law.
Building Essential Skills
Students are given detailed case studies that can be in different areas of law. This year they covered family, commercial and contract law in the negotiations.
Negotiation skills are indispensable for aspiring lawyers, as many legal disputes are resolved through negotiated agreements rather than court proceedings. These skills are also highly transferable, providing a competitive edge in any career.
Congratulations to our winners, and good luck to Victoria and Angelo as they represent Brighton in the national competition!
