Digital Marketing MSc student lands dream SEO job

Changing careers is an exciting step and for our graduate Selin, it meant going back to university to pursue an MSc in Digital Marketing. Despite having no prior experience in digital marketing, Selin embraced this new challenge with enthusiasm and determination. With the expert guidance from our teaching team, hands-on learning and a supporting academic environment, Selin gained a distinction in her degree and was able to secure her dream job at a local SEO agency shortly after graduating.

Today, Selin works as a Trainee SEO Analyst at SEOMG!, a top SEO agency in Brighton. We caught up with Selin to chat about her journey, from choosing the course to her student experience and landing a coveted SEO position right here in the city.

What initially attracted you to pursue a Marketing MSc?

“Having worked in customer services and sales positions throughout my career I always found marketing fascinating and decided to do my master’s in marketing as a career path change.”

Why did you choose the University of Brighton?

“Firstly because of the digital marketing master’s course they are offering and secondly due to it being in the city of Brighton. Brighton is a very lively city with a diverse population, and it turned into my happy place.”

What new skills or knowledge have you gained from the course?

“I didn’t know anything about marketing especially digital marketing when I applied for the course and I was actually scared I wasn’t going to be able to do well in the course. But with the guidance of my lecturers and a very well-planned curriculum I just stuck to my lessons, readings, did my best and finished my course with a distinction.

My favourite modules were with our beloved lecturer Rodrigo. Especially Branding and Communications. We learnt how to think like a marketer throughout the lessons and the effort put into the class by the lecturers was incredible.”

In what ways has the course helped support your career goals and job search?

“We had guest speakers from the sector with years of experience coming to give us insights and share their hands-on experience. We also had career days where we got 1-on-1 help with our CV.

I was lucky that my lecturer Rodrigo shared this entry-level SEO trainee opening at SEOMG! An award-winning SEO company from Brighton with his students. He had heard about it from another former student who was working in that company. This happened in June right after I graduated.

I directly applied to the company, introduced myself and mentioned I heard about the job from my lecturer who taught their current employee, and it helped me get the interview.”

How do you feel the course has equipped you with the skills and confidence needed for the workplace?

“I gained all my marketing understanding from the course, I wouldn’t have applied for this kind of position without the knowledge and confidence that the course gave me.”

Tell us a bit about your new role…

“I am now a trainee SEO analyst at SEOMG!. I knew I wanted to work at SEO since even before I was a student at the University of Brighton and it’s a dream come true for me to be able to work here. The office environment is great I am learning loads every day.

There are people employed with tens of years of experience in SEO and I am getting training from them which is incredibly valuable.”

Is there any advice you would give to someone considering the Marketing MSc at Brighton?

“I would say just go for it. I pondered about doing the leap of my master’s for so many years. I had a full-time well-paying job and I was comfortable enough to keep postponing it. And since I came here I never looked back. I am working on my dreams and loving every second.”
