Marketing Management student Naomi Spence speaks at House of Commons event
University of Brighton student Naomi Spence recently took part in a student panel at the launch of Get Further’s five-year strategy, held in the historic Churchill Room at the House of Commons.
As a panel speaker, she shared her journey of overcoming challenges in education, inspiring policymakers, trustees, and education advocates.
Building Confidence and Resilience
Reflecting on her experience, Naomi described how Get Further’s small group tuition in further education helped her overcome barriers in maths:
“During the COVID-19 pandemic, I struggled to pass my maths GCSE. When I went to college, Get Further provided me with small group tuition, and their support was vital in helping me pass. This experience built my confidence and resilience, shaping my approach to future challenges.”, Naomi said.
She also explained the long-term value of foundational qualifications:
“Having maths and English GCSEs is essential for career progression. I spoke about my journey before Get Further, the support I received, and how it’s allowed me to confidently plan my career after university.”
Advocating for Educational Access
Naomi used the platform to advocate for education equity, highlighting the role of tailored support:
“Without small group tuition, the education gap would be even larger. It’s so important that students from all backgrounds have equal access to education and opportunities.”
Her message was particularly powerful alongside the words of Professor Jason Arday, one of the youngest Black professors at the University of Cambridge. He shared his own story of overcoming significant challenges, including being non-verbal until his teens, thanks to a supportive teacher in further education.
Networking and planning ahead for Naomi
Speaking at such a prestigious event was also a chance for Naomi to connect with professionals passionate about transforming education:
“It was an honour to share my story and reflect on how Get Further has positively impacted my learning journey and future. Meeting so many inspiring individuals committed to education equity was a privilege.”
