Silver Award 2023 Teaching Excellence Framework

Brighton uni secures national silver award for teaching excellence

We’ve been recognised for the quality of our teaching and student outcomes in a UK-wide evaluation of higher education institutions.

The university has secured a silver award in the national Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF). This award confirms that the student experience and student outcomes across all of the university’s undergraduate provision, including apprenticeships, are “typically very high quality”, delivering excellence above the rigorous standards set for the UK’s higher education providers. The rating lasts for four years, until September 2027.

The TEF is a national scheme run by the Office for Students (OfS). It aims to encourage universities to improve and deliver excellence in the areas that students care about the most: teaching, learning and achieving positive outcomes from their studies.

The University of Brighton offers a wide range of support to help students succeed academically and set them on their chosen career path. Employability is fundamental to all Brighton courses and students are encouraged to take up industry placements and other work-related experience. As a result, Brighton is in the top 50 universities for graduate prospects, with 91.4% of students in work or further study.

High scores on employability and other student outcomes also helped Brighton jump by 22 places in this year’s Guardian University Guide 2024. The Guardian also ranked Brighton at number 11 nationally for value-added – a score which compares a student’s degree results with their entry qualifications to show how effectively they are taught. This underlines the ongoing success of the university’s ability to support each student’s educational circumstances, and to make sure that every individual is given equal opportunity to achieve their potential.

Commenting on the results, Professor Debra Humphris CBE, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Brighton, said: “Brighton continues to be a destination of choice for students from our region, across the UK and around the world. By focusing on what matters most to them – high quality teaching, modern facilities and great job prospects – we’re setting our students up for a successful future, whichever path they choose.”

“I am delighted that the teaching, learning and outcomes we provide for our students have been assessed to consistently exceed the rigorous standards set down for UK universities. This is a great result and further underlines the enduring value of a University of Brighton degree.

“We will continue to use feedback from our students and the Teaching Excellence Framework results to look at how we can make further improvements.”
