Up on a hill in the Yorkshire Dales… I am feeling at home and enjoying every moment in this beautiful landscape, each day is a learning opportunity and a chance to appreciate what is around me. Driving here we passed rolling hills, cross-crossed with dry stone walls and speckled with various species of sheep and cow, including Yorkshires iconic Swaledale sheep, Dale’s shorthorn and Highland cows.

University of Brighton leads drive to boost BAME student organ donation

Researchers and students have teamed up for a project to tackle shortages in relation to blood and organ donation in BAME communities across the UK.

With the help of funding from NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT), Simonne Weeks (Senior Lecturer in Biomedical Science) and Rebecca Craig (Senior Lecturer in Nursing) have overseen a project with students from Black, Asian, Mixed Heritage and Minority Ethnic (BAME) backgrounds to create  online awareness initiatives to support students across the UK to register an informed choice to donate organs, and tell others. Training weeks at FSC Millport

Arriving to the island of Great Cumbrae by the ferry and a short bus journey, with tall sandstone cliffs covered with ferns to the left and a calm Scottish sea channel to the right of me, brought me to my home away from home for the next two weeks. Biomedical Science Degree Apprenticeship graduate, Meghann Creffield, won the award for Outstanding Contribution by an Apprentice to an Employer, at the Brighton and Hove Apprenticeships Awards, after being nominated by the Royal Sussex County Hospital pathology department where she works. Dr Corina Ciocan and Dr Mary Gearey are running a workshop on 9 September, revealing the ocean pollution caused by decaying fibreglass boats.

You need to research different courses before making a decision

Photo of Seniz Mustafa, ecology studentChoosing what to study was slightly difficult as there are a range of courses related to the environment, each specialising in varyingly different areas. Originally I wanted to study zoology because I loved learning about animals, but I changed my mind to Ecology because I also wanted to learn about the environment in addition to that. It required looking at different courses and what they each taught, for my course I was really excited by the opportunities of field trips and lab work to supplement my knowledge – such as trips to Shropshire and Stanmer park where I learned about bird and plant identification.
