Study skills

Aim: to support students in their learning

How: potential gaps in a student’s study skills should be addressed through targeted skills development within the curriculum rather than as bolt-ons e.g. include as a learning outcome, module content, provide in transition weeks to prepare students for the next stage of study.

During a lecture ask students to swop / compare notes (provides a break and develops note-taking skills)

Considerations:

  1. What are the skills required? E.g. digital literacy, academic writing, numeracy, listening, note-taking, time management, literature searching
  2. Where are these skills addressed and assessed (formative feedback or summative assessment)?
  3. Support a growth versus fixed mind set
  4. Provide opportunity to pursue subjects at depth, choice over subjects and study method
