The WeValue approach has been developed with the input of over 2000 individuals in 61 countries, and tested in over 150 organisations and social action projects across the world, including work with the International Federation of the Red Cross, the Earth Charter Initiative, the Alliance for Religions and Conservation and Reforestamos Mexico A.C.
The WeValue approach has core elements which include a skilled facilitator, values elicitation processes, the use of a set of WeValue indicators , and an understanding of underpinning theories. Without these, even otherwise skilled facilitators may not achieve satisfactory outcomes. With them, some quite remarkable transformations and achievements have been obtained.
To ensure that WeValue based workshops achieve a standard quality and maintain their reputation, a Certification system has been set up for recognised facilitators.
Facilitator training
Current WeValue facilitators have been trained through collaborative research projects led by the University of Brighton. In response to a growing demand or facilitation training and certification, the Values and Sustainability Research Group at the University of Brighton is developing a certification program.
The following are the minimum requirements are deemed necessary for a facilitator to be ready to lead WeValue workshops:
- Participate in or observe of a full WeValue workshop, from beginning to end;
- Reflection on their experience in (1);
- Plan a workshop, including writing a Workshop Plan (template provided);
- Lead an entire workshop, with a Certified Facilitator. (We recommend that where possible the candidate leads first in sub-elements as preparation, but this may not always be possible to arrange);
- Demonstrate an understanding of the stated needs of the user group;
- Demonstrate knowledge of key elements within the WeValue approach and how these need to be contextualised – from experience and available training resources. (This may be in the form of a test or assignment);
- Demonstrate an awareness of ethical issues relating to conducting a WeValue workshop.
For those interested in certification for formal WeValue values-led evaluation, additional requirements include:
- Completed work with a group to develop and implement an evaluation strategy based on a values framework (developed through WeValue approach);
- Demonstrate ability to design an evaluation process (including use of different assessment methods);
- Demonstrate ability to justify decisions about the extent, breadth and depth of participation within the evaluation process;
- Demonstrate an understanding of basic rigour and validity issues.
The detail will vary slightly depending on the specified type of organisation/project/group and the purpose of the work.
Certification
The Certifying Body is the Values and Sustainability Research Group, University of Brighton. The certification process will be based on the completion of items outlined above, in any relevant combination. This will provide an overall score which will be complemented by the Certifying Body representative’s experience of working with the prospective WeValue Facilitator.
