All out on 24th, 25th and 30th November!
UCU has called three days of strike action in every university in the country starting in two weeks. The strike dates are Thursday 24th, Friday 25th and Wednesday 30th. For the first two of those days, we will be joined on strike by our Unison colleagues.
We have a massive mandate for action, with an 81% majority for strike action on a 58% turnout. We are not prepared to tolerate the employers imposing another huge cut to the value of our pay by imposing a 3% award with inflation running at over 10%.
These strike days are just the start. UCU’s Higher Education Committee voted to implement a marking and assessment boycott in the New Year and, if there is no acceptable offer from the employers, to escalate our action sharply from the start of Semester 2.
We are not doing this to make a protest. Nor are we playing a long game of gradually increasing pressure on the employers. The intention is to ramp up our action quickly to cause massive disruption so that we win an acceptable offer sooner rather than later.
We are part of a growing wave of revolt against the collapse of living standards in this country. Our three November strike days coincide with strikes by postal workers. We will be organising joint activities with them.
Nurses in the (formerly no-strike) RCN have now voted overwhelmingly for strike action. They will be joined by other health workers who are still balloting, and by civil servants. The cost-of living crisis affects us all and we are stronger fighting together.
Join us on the picket lines and on the demonstration in London on Wednesday 30th.
