Falmer campus to reopen 25 November (11:00am 24 Nov)
Falmer campus to reopen Friday 25 November
We are delighted to confirm that the gas leak at Falmer has now been repaired and all academic buildings will reopen on 25 November.
We are very sorry for any inconvenience that this has caused and would like to thank our students and colleagues for their cooperation whilst Southern Gas Networks (SGN) have resolved the issue.
Previous update – Falmer closed 23 November and will remain closed 24 November as at 11:45am 23 November
Southern Gas Networks have worked throughout the night to repair the gas leak at our Falmer campus. However, the very wet weather and the 6m depth at which the pipe is buried are making conditions very challenging for the repair to be undertaken. On this basis, it is unlikely that this work will be completed today and may well extend into the following day.
To give our students and colleagues the ability to have as much time as possible to plan, we have decided that the Falmer campus will therefore remain closed on Thursday 24 November.
Our Falmer-based students should continue to check for updates on teaching schedules on My Studies (via My Brighton).
Staff based at the Falmer campus should continue to liaise with their line manager for further information, including, where possible, the ability to work remotely.
Facilities at our City and Moulsecoomb campuses remain open for use by all students and staff.
Once again, we are very sorry for the inconvenience that this is causing.
Previous update, 3:45pm 22 Nov – Falmer will remain closed 23 November
Southern Gas Networks (SGN) have now completed their investigations at our Falmer campus. They have informed us that the nature of the damage to the mains gas pipe means that they will need to undertake significant repairs that will continue tomorrow. They have assured us that they are prioritising these works and will be working on these repairs throughout the night and day until they are completed. This means, however, that the Falmer campus, with the exception of our halls of residence, will remain closed on the 23 November.
We regret that this emergency has required the Falmer campus to be closed, and that campus-based teaching and related activities has to be rearranged.
Your academic schools are committed to ensuring that your education is not compromised by what has happened and will contact you with further information regarding online delivery of teaching, where possible. Please check My Studies (via Mty Brighton) as a priority for updates on teaching sessions scheduled for Wednesday 23 November. Facilities at our City and Moulsecoomb campuses remain open for use by all students and staff.
Staff based at the Falmer campus should contact their line manager for further information, including, where possible, the ability to work remotely.
We will provide further updates through the course of Wednesday. Once again, we apologise for any inconvenience that has been caused by these exceptional circumstances which are beyond the control of the University.
