Five ways to get a job

Maybe you’re thinking about getting a part-time job or you’re starting to think about your career after graduating. We spoke to students on each campus to hear their top tips for getting a job.

Tom is in his second year studying Humanities whilst working in a supermarket on weekends. He says:

“It’s really important that your CV looks good! I would say keep it short and sweet. Don’t ramble on about the swimming badges you got when you were seven.”

Dani is in her second year studying Accountancy and Finance, whilst working as a telephone fundraiser for the uni. This is her advice.

“Look EVERYWHERE! Even at our uni there are jobs. I’ve often found jobs on Twitter and Facebook. I’ve seen that the Careers Service tweet jobs too.”

Final year Sport and Exercise Science student Ben works part time at Brighton and Hove Albion FC.

“You’ve got to tweak your CV and your cover letter to each job that you’re applying for. The employers will know if you’re just sending the same one out to everyone else. It looks good if you know your stuff about the company.”

Lucille is doing her PGCE at the Falmer campus. She says the key to getting a job is networking.

“Put yourself out there. It’s really scary but it’s the only way. The more people you meet and the more you network, the more likely you are to get a job. Be friendly, sign up to LinkedIn and go to job events like the Careers Fair. It really helped me get a part-time job at Jane Norman.”

Broadcast Journalism student, George, is in his third year and says don’t give up.

“Be persistent. If you email someone to ask for a job, make sure you’re friendly but don’t let them forget about you. That said, don’t stalk them!”
