A new Vice-Chancellor for our university
Professor Debra Humphris CBE has announced that the search for the next Vice-Chancellor of our University is now under way, and that she will be bringing forward her retirement to September 2024.
Here, she shares some of the highlights, and challenges, of her time at Brighton, and discusses the University’s plans for the future.
Debra writes….
After almost ten years leading this amazing university, the search for my successor as Vice-Chancellor is now under way with a view to them joining us here in Brighton by the summer of 2025.
It has been an immense privilege to serve as your Vice-Chancellor since 2015. The time has flown by, filled with challenges and triumphs alike. Through it all, you, our talented students, have consistently amazed and inspired me.
The highlight of my time here has been witnessing your journeys, and seeing the amazing work my colleagues do to empower you to reach your full potential. It brings me such immense pride to see Brighton graduates leaving their mark on the world, whether that’s here in our city, across the UK, around the globe, or even now in space!
I have always felt able to be my authentic self here at Brighton – it’s one of the things I love so much about this university and its values. So, I want to share with you a personal decision I have made.
My partner, Caroline, has late-stage dementia. The sad truth is that we do not have much time left together. As a result, I’ve decided to step down earlier than planned, in September 2024, to spend more precious time with her.
While I’m leaving the role of Vice-Chancellor, the University of Brighton will always hold a special place in my heart. I’ve learned so much from each of you, and I’m deeply proud of all our students, past and present. It has been an honour to be part of your journey and I will continue to cheer you all on from the sidelines.
Professor Andrew Lloyd, our Deputy Vice-Chancellor, will lead the university in advance of the transition to a permanent successor next year. I have total confidence in him, the university leadership team and all my colleagues to guide you through this exciting time.
As for you, our incredible students – never stop chasing your dreams. The University of Brighton will always be here to support you, whatever path you choose.
With heartfelt thanks,
Debra
