Get recycling this festive season
As the festive season continues, it’s essential to be mindful of the environmental impact of our celebrations. Let’s make a collective effort to recycle wisely and reduce waste. Here’s a quick guide on recycling during this festive period:
1. Wrapping Up
- Ensure wrapping paper, gift bags, and cardboard boxes go into the recycling bin.
- No glitter or foil-covered items, please!
- Remove sticky tape, flatten large boxes, and keep everything dry for recycling.
2. Christmas Trees
Real trees can be recycled in two ways:
- Brighton residents can arrange for charity, Off the Fence (via the Just Helping) to collect it for a charitable contribution.
- Use your local council Christmas tree recycling points from 27 December 2023 to 22 January 2024.
3. Glass and Metal
- Recycle beer, wine, and spirit bottles, as well as jars for jams, chutneys, and more.
- Don’t forget metal lids – put them back on the glass container before recycling.
4. Tetra Paks and Cartons
- Separate Tetra Paks for milk and fruit juice – recycle them at specific points.
- Rinse, wash, squash, and put plastic lids back on before recycling.
5. Electrical Items
- If it works, sell or donate; if broken, recycle!
- Donate or recycle Christmas lights, laptops, phones, and other electricals at designated points.
6. Household Waste Recycling Sites (HWRS)
- Biscuit tins, chocolate tubs, and other items can be recycled at our HWRS.
- Check the HWRS webpage for Christmas opening hours.
7. Clothing and Textiles
- Donate unwanted clothes, including Christmas jumpers and pyjamas, to charity shops or use textile recycling points.
8. Battery Recycling:
- Most shops and supermarkets have battery recycling bins.
- Remove lithium batteries from electrical items before recycling.
9. Collection Changes
- Note that collection days will change during the Christmas period. Ensure recycling and refuse are out by 6 am.
Let’s make this festive season both joyful and environmentally friendly! Thank you for being mindful of our planet. Happy holidays! 🌍🎄
