Turkey and Syria earthquake: statement from the Vice-Chancellor

We will all have seen the devastating images of the destruction left in the wake of the earthquakes affecting Turkey and Syria on Sunday and Monday. 

Our thoughts go out to the families and loved ones of those killed and injured, to those who have lost their homes and livelihoods, and to those waiting in desperate hope to be reunited with the people who have not yet been found.

As ever at times like these, we are reminded that the University of Brighton is an international community, and that some of our students and colleagues will have been personally affected by these events. I would like to extend my personal sympathies to these members of our community, as I know you will too.

Our initial priority has been for our International Advice and Support team to identify and offer personal support to all students from the affected region, and we are in the process of doing the same with our colleagues.

However, witnessing such a devastating natural disaster, even from afar, will leave none of us untouched. If you have been affected by events in Turkey and Syria, our Student Wellbeing team are always ready to offer assistance. There are also online wellbeing resources here.

We are lucky at Brighton to have a close-knit community, and I know that you will continue to offer each other your support as this terrible situation unfolds over the coming days and weeks.
