Holocaust Memorial Day – 27 January
Holocaust Memorial Day will this year take place on Friday 27 January with a theme of ‘ordinary people’. Held each year on the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi camp, Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) is a day to remember the Holocaust and its six million Jewish victims, as well as the victims of Nazi persecution of other groups and more recent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia, and Darfur.
The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust (HMDT) was created in 2005 to promote and support HMD. It aims to commemorate and increase knowledge of the Holocaust, Nazi persecution of other groups and subsequent genocides, illustrated by the experiences of people who were persecuted, and to promote a society free from identity-based hostility and persecution.
This year, the charity is stressing the role that ordinary people played in the Holocaust and other genocides – both as persecutors and victims.

The HMDT will be screening the full commemoration online from 7pm on Thursday 26 January.
