Changes to fire evacuation arrangements

Fire evacuation arrangements for the City campus and parts of the Moulsecoomb campus have been updated to better accommodate Covid-19 social distancing requirements.

The updated arrangements apply from Monday 21 September to the following buildings:

  • Cockcroft
  • Aldrich
  • Mithras House
  • Huxley
  • Watts
  • All City Campus buildings (Grand Parade etc.)

Arrangements at all other buildings and campuses will remain unchanged.

What to do if you hear a fire alarm

During a fire alarm activation in these locations, building occupants will be asked to disperse away from their building and the immediate locality and return after 15 minutes, rather than gathering at the normal fire assembly point.

Estates and Facilities Management staff will use this time to investigate the cause of the alarm.

At the end of this 15-minute period, the Building Evacuation Controller will either provide building users with a further update, or instruct them to re-enter the building, observing social-distancing guidance and washing or sanitising hands before restarting work.

Those who may need assistance to exit a building during a fire alarm must have a Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP) or Generic Emergency Evacuation Plan (GEEP) in place. This plan may instruct the individual to go to the nearest refuge area in the building. The refuge communication intercom will then be used to advise the occupant to ‘stay put’ whilst the incident is investigated.
