Studying abroad in Brighton, UK: An International Student’s Perspective

Starting university in another country is a significant change, and as an international student at the University of Brighton, I’ve experienced both the excitement and the challenges that come with it. The idea of moving to a new country, adapting to a different education system, and making new friends can be overwhelming, but it’s also an adventure that brings incredible opportunities for growth and because the University of Brighton has a student friendly environment, lovely supporting staff and lecturers, I found the journey much easier!

Studying Abroad: Before I Arrived

I had many different University options, but I was drawn to study at Brighton University for many reasons; firstly, Brighton’s reputation as a vibrant, diverse, and student-friendly city was very attractive, secondly as a sportsperson, I was particularly attracted to their world-class sports infrastructure and finally, the university’s commitment to inclusivity and its focus on supporting students to succeed made Brighton stand out to me. I knew that I would be in an environment that not only values education but also encourages personal growth.

Studying Abroad: When I First Arrived

When I first arrived in the United Kingdom from New Delhi, India, I had mixed feeling as I was away from home, alone, but when I travelled to Brighton I was amazed by how lively and welcoming the city felt. The seaside atmosphere immediately put me at ease, and the diversity of people and cultures made it feel very friendly, even though I was thousands of miles away from where I grew up! Brighton is known for its inclusivity; it is a versatile city that consist of people all from all over the world and you can access most cuisines without having to look too far! I quickly realised that no matter where you’re from, Brighton has a place for you!

There were some challenges, one of the biggest was getting used to the academic system here. The teaching style is a bit different from what I was used to. I found there to be a lot more emphasis on independent study and critical thinking, it took some time to adapt, but the support services and lecturers at my university were a huge help. There are dedicated advisors for international students who guided me through everything from course selection to understanding the grading system.

Studying Abroad: How I Feel Now

Studying abroad has been an incredible journey, and as I reflect on my time at the University of Brighton, I feel a mix of challenges, growth, and excitement for what lies ahead.

However, like many international students, I’ve also had to navigate feelings of homesickness, especially in the early days. To combat feeling homesick, I found it important to stay connected with my roots while embracing the new experiences around me. Regular video calls with family and friends back home have been a lifeline, allowing me to stay close to those I care about.

The university also offers numerous student societies and sports clubs, which anyone can join, including those specifically for international students. Joining these groups helped me meet people who were going through similar experiences, which made the transition easier.

For other international students considering studying in Brighton or the UK, my advice would be to embrace the journey with an open mind. Also, don’t hesitate to reach out for support whether it’s through university resources, fellow students, or local communities. Engage in campus life, join sports clubs or societies, and take advantage of the opportunities to explore the city and meet new people and gain knowledge.
