Formative assessment i.e. assessment for learning
Formative assessment enables students to try out new assessment types, to express their learning, to get feedback on strengths and areas to develop and to understand the quality of their work whilst studying.
The module specification must state (in the ‘Teaching and learning activities’ section):
- The form of the formative assessment task e.g. online test, essay plan seminar presentation, peer review of work
- When it will take place i.e. during a taught session or independent study
- How students will get feedback e.g. online test auto mark, oral feedback, written feedback; from peer or academic
Examples of formative assessments:
- Set up a discussion board to develop learning networks
- Develop a reading log
- Review an article review
- Group presentation
- Mock examination
- Self-assessment – students generate criteria appropriate for assessing own work
- Annotated bibliography What is an annotated bibliography?
Annotate exemplars of summative assessments to identify where the student was meeting the learning outcomes or could meet them better. This can apply to all forms of assessment; essays, posters, OSCEs and presentations (if videoed)
