Drawing Workshop 1

These drawing workshops are beneficial to my development of my illustration skills because we are allowed to be free with the materials we draw with, we’re not briefed to do anything but simply draw or collage the figure we see without any limitations. This helps me because I can be expressive with the materials I use, and the combinations between different materials that I can use to see what works and what doesn’t because even if they don’t work as well it’s helpful to know for the future to avoid those techniques or give them another try to see how they work.

Even the use of music in the background allows me to relaxed and focus on the movements of my hands to create marks which can be related to the music to give a different impression of the figure and clothing I’m drawing than if I were to be listening to another type of music.

I created some work I was feeling positive about in this workshop because briefly I was worried about this project and being able to create illustrations that looked aesthetically pleasing and realistic however, I’ve come to realise that the point in illustration is about creating your own personal style with the image you see in front of you creating something truly unique to yourself with whatever materials suit you as opposed to focusing on what someone else is doing. Some of my friends are using a lot of coloured pens to create their illustrations which looked beautiful however using those doesn’t work as well for me. therefore I stick to using a lot of oil pastels and black fine liner or brush style ens which create a better image for myself. Also creating fashion illustrations of these very obscure and crazy outfits that we were also styling was helpful in thinking of the style of illustrations that I wanted for my zines.
