[:en]The Extinction Rebellion is a movement founded in the UK that aims to raise awareness of issues caused by the current climate change climate and of civil disobedience; their main aim is highlighting that individuals need to look after themselves in order to look after the earth and to live in harmony. The ‘rebellion’ is fuelled by the combined love within the core of the campaign that is growing as individuals are being to face the grief produced by current times. In fact, ‘grief’ is the main part of this movements work. The group brings together people from all walks of life; sisterhood, volunteers, the youth, brotherhood, Muslims, elders, families and young children. Their principles and values are as followed:

  1. WE HAVE A SHARED VISION OF CHANGE
Creating a world that is fit for generations to come.
  2. WE SET OUR MISSION ON WHAT IS NECESSARY
Mobilising 3.5% of the population to achieve system change – using ideas such as “Momentum-driven organising” to achieve this.
  3. WE NEED A REGENERATIVE CULTURE
Creating a culture which is healthy, resilient and adaptable.
  4. WE OPENLY CHALLENGE OURSELVES AND THIS TOXIC SYSTEM
Leaving our comfort zones to take action for change.
  5. WE VALUE REFLECTING AND LEARNING
Following a cycle of action, reflection, learning, and planning for more action. Learning from other movements and contexts as well as our own experiences.
  6. WE WELCOME EVERYONE AND EVERY PART OF EVERYONE
Working actively to create safer and more accessible spaces.
  7. WE ACTIVELY MITIGATE FOR POWER
Breaking down hierarchies of power for more equitable participation.
  8. WE AVOID BLAMING AND SHAMING
We live in a toxic system, but no one individual is to blame.
  9. WE ARE A NON-VIOLENT NETWORK
Using non-violent strategy and tactics as the most effective way to bring about change.
  10. WE ARE BASED ON AUTONOMY AND DECENTRALISATION
We collectively create the structures we need to challenge power. Anyone who follows these core principles and values can take action in the name of Extinction Rebellion.

Bringing together and building the connections between our society and the environment in order to work together to achieve the same goal of saving our planet is at the heart of this campaign. Combining individuals from all walks of life and creating hope is thought to be their understanding of the most effective way to enable us as a collective to choose the direction of both our futures and lives. This also allows future decision making for everyone fair and equal. Sparking creativity is also at the forefront of this campaign as a tool to inspire individuals to think outside of the box when creating solutions for the current climate issues, also, to inspire campaign organisers to, skilfully, open spaces for communities to use when developing their skills and knowledge needed to address the world deep-rooted problems.

“We work to transform our society into one that is compassionate, inclusive, sustainable, equitable and connected.” – Extinction Rebellion

The website is transparent in terms of letting people know openly what happens behind closed doors. It’s organisers are constantly learning from individuals feedback and has a very experimental approach to how they inspire others to get on board, often working with prototype plans.

Below are their demands:

  1. That the Government must tell the truth about how deadly our situation is, it must reverse all policies not in alignment with that position and must work alongside the media to communicate the urgency for change including what individuals, communities and businesses need to do.
  2. The Government must enact legally-binding policies to reduce carbon emissions in the UK to net zero by 2025 and take further action to remove the excess of atmospheric greenhouse gases. It must cooperate internationally so that the global economy runs on no more than half a planet’s worth of resources per year.
  3. By necessity these demands require initiatives and mobilisation of similar size and scope to those enacted in times of war. We do not however, trust our Government to make the bold, swift and long-term changes necessary to achieve this and we do not intend to hand further power to our politicians. Instead we demand a Citizens’ Assembly to oversee the changes, as we rise from the wreckage, creating a democracy fit for purpose.

To achieve their goals, to get their demands listened to and to see the government taking action on these points organisers from this campaign are willing to make personal sacrifices. Through leading by example, they hope to inspire others around the world to join the fight.

What attracted me to this campaign was the idea of ‘community’ and ‘connections’ as it seems to be the bases of this movement. Bringing people together from all walks of life makes a stronger and more effective end goal. When an issue such as climate change and the breakdown of civilisation is as huge and overwhelming as it is, it is important for everyone to join in. If everyone did a small thing it all begins to build up into something bigger. This is something I have begun to understand for my campaign as young individuals from the age 14-17 are still at school and have little or no money. These two factors create limitations for this demographic in terms of what they are capable of doing towards campaigning towards a greener future. The idea of doing little things as a collective is at the heart of my campaign.

Another factor that caught my attention was the campaigns visuals, shown in figures     . I really love the typography used, it plays a huge part when creating cohesion between the website and posters. The strong letters create a sense of importance yet are not ‘shouty’ nor ‘obnoxious’. Also, the illustrative patterns used represent the creative expression of this campaign; a style I want to experiment with in my visuals.[:]
