The Oculus Rift, at the moment, can be used on the medium-size 6DOF and the Space Simulator. The Simulation Suite team, however, is gradually arranging sensor mounts on each machine so that the headset can be easily moved from platform to platform as required. They also have plans to purchase the new HTC ViveProEye which will have eye-tracking as well as head/motion tracking along with better resolution screens. So far they have used the Oculus with XPlane, Assetto, and the Space Simulator to increase immersion and there is scope for students to develop their own simulators to use with the motion platforms and headsets.
The suite is primarily a resource for CEM students with an emphasis on Engineering. They have had a couple of modules taught directly using the suite this semester with more coming online next year as the curriculum review progresses. Some students are also looking into using the suite for their final year projects next year. There is certainly scope for students from other schools to have projects involved but this would need permission/agreement/negotiation with Bill Whitney: w.r.whitney@brighton.ac.uk and David Stansbury: d.stansbury@brighton.ac.uk.
The Simulation Suite team is happy for students from other schools to come and try out the simulators. However, it is important that anyone coming for a go talks first to David Rothwell: d.p.rothwell@brighton.ac.uk, or Richard Chambers: r.n.chambers@brighton.ac.uk as they have a small safety briefing that they must deliver before allowing students, or any other member of the staff, access to the machines within the suite.
