About the Workshop
Organizer: Giulia Tranquillini, School of Media, BA (Hons) Media, Industry & Innovation final year student.
As part of her Bachelor’s final year Live Project within the VR/AR/MR-in-Education Industry, Giulia Tranquillini has organized a workshop in collaboration with Chris Long, Business Developer at Immersive VR Education, Ltd., to introduce members of the staff at the University of Brighton to their Multi-Users Virtual Environment (MUVE) platform ENGAGE. The driving purposes of the workshop were to:
- Raise awareness about an alternative, accessible and emerging immersive solution for educational and training purposes to those interested in further exploring and experimenting with immersive media in their teaching and learning practices.
- Allow both technical and academic staff members to share their concerns and interests about the impact, potentials, and challenges of using Immersive Media at the University of Brighton with an industry expert of both the immersive and education sectors.
Designed and used for corporate training and education purposes, the free-to-download platform ENGAGE can host up to 40 users at the same time and can be accessed with a variety of VR and MR Headsets, including, but not limited to – Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and HP Windows MR. During the workshop, both an HTC VIVE and an Oculus Rift have been used to give participants the opportunity to familiarise with the platform by exploring different virtual learning environments (VLEs) simultaneously with Chris. Alongside the demos, Q&As sessions between Chris and the members of the staff have been key in bringing upon the surface both concerns and interests in regards to ENGAGE as a potential educational tool, as well as to the adoption of immersive media for teaching and learning at the University of Brighton, more broadly.
Members of the staff that attended the Workshop came from: the School of Media, the School of Business, the School of Computing, Engineering & Mathematics, Central Media Services and from the eLearning Team.
