I decided to draw the previous illustration of the man lying on the cold hill’s side, onto my bathroom floor, but just using a white outline so it looks like a crime scene. I started the photoshoot with just the outline on the floor, i then decided to write a powerful quote from the poem next to it.. ‘ This is why i sojourn here ‘, Which is the reader in the poem telling us why he woke up on the cold hill’s side all alone. I then began writing several quotes from the poem with deeper meanings on the bathroom walls in red paint. I’m not sure if this added to the photograph or not, and feel as if it is not needed.

Different process of favourite image
I am experimenting with my favourite illustration from the line in the poem ‘And i awoke, and found me here on the cold hill’s side’
I created these by using stencils and spray paint onto calico to create bold, graphic silhouettes and experimented with repetition to almost create a fabric print that could be used on furniture, cushions etc. After using this process, i was inspired by how the image looked like a crime scene/murder silhouette. I am going to explore this idea further on a larger scale to emphasise on the sinister truth of this seemingly magical, romantic poem.
Experimenting with composition and surfaces.
These illustrations were created using textured surfaces that i made by rolling out red ink onto cartridge paper, then using a white ink pen to draw on top. This process gave my illustrations a whole new atmosphere and potential meaning.. The red becomes symbolic of danger and makes the message of a more sinister and darker meaning to the quotes more obvious than before. I also think the textured surface is nice to work on and compliments the drawings, although the minimalistic and eerily clean manner of my initial experiments still appeal to me and have an interesting take on the brief.
Mini Booklets
These mini booklets were really fun to make and i am happy with the outcome, yet i don’t feel as if my illustrations portray the message i want to communicate very well as they don’t reveal the hidden darker meanings of my chosen quotes from the poem, therefore i am going to experiment further with different imagery and also varied processes and materials to make my work stronger.

SEMIOTICS PROJECT: THE LANGUAGE, SYMBOLS AND SIGNS OF..
CHOSEN BRIEF: Brief no.3 – Language: hidden meanings and verbal camouflage.
For this project, i am going to explore language through the form of poetry. I have chosen to focus my project around one poem in perticular, ‘La Belle Dame Sans Merci’ by John Keats. I have chosen this poem for my semiotics project as this 19th century ‘love’ poem uses extremely elaborate, romantic imagery and metaphor, that appear beautiful when read, to convey darker meanings.
