Participating in the Research
Interested in participating in the GambLGBTQ+ project?
This page gives you some more information on what the requirements to participate are and, if interested, directions on what to do next.
The GambLGBTQ+ project and Photovoice
GambLGBTQ+ is a research project seeking to understand gambling and related harms in LGBTQ+ communities. Research on LGBTQ+ gambling and gambling harms is limited, and the research that is available highlights the need for further research on the lived experiences of gambling for LGBTQ+ people and in particular those whose identities and backgrounds are minoritised and overlooked.
The University of Brighton are leading on GambLGBTQ+ in collaboration with LGBT Switchboard Brighton & Hove and YouGov and is funded by GambleAware. This part of the research uses photovoice, which means using photography to represent a topic or issue (such as how gambling has effected your life) from your perspective, and then discussing these photos in a small group or 1-2-1 interview, depending on your preference. Don’t worry if you feel you’re not a photographer or have no experience in taking photos. We will provide support and guidance to help you feel confident taking photos. You can choose to contribute your photos to a photo exhibition which will be held in Brighton in the summer. The group or interview will be in-person or online (we will do our best to take any preferences into account) and facilitated by the lead researcher and/or one of the peer researchers who are all LGBTQ+ themselves.
What are the criteria for participating in the project?
To participate you should be:
- Aged 18 or older
- live in the city of Brighton & Hove or the surrounding Sussex area
- self-identify as LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or as having another minority sexual orientation or gender identity, or as intersex)
- have some experience of the harms associated with gambling (e.g. financial harms, emotional, health, well-being and/or relationship harms, and employment and housing insecurity).
- AND are included in one or more of the following groups:
