Pestle and Mortar

After making my sphere oil candle I wanted to demonstrate more skills whilst wood turning. A pestle and Mortar was perfect to show making the bowl shape as well as free standing wood turning. (Where it’s not fixed on both sides). This also meant I was using different chucks to fix the wood. Here I had to be much more delicate with the pressure applied to the wood (pine) as it is soft and fractures easily.

I was extremely pleased with the result especially considering that it is not the appropriate wood. (Needs a denser wood). And the original piece was very small in order to make a bowl.

Be aware of the treatment used after as it has to be food friendly. Suggestions include Peanut Oil, Beeswax, Tung Oil, Coconut Oil.

The only problem with this pestle and mortar is that the wood is so soft it probably wouldn’t even make a pesto.
