Thank you to speakers Henrique Oliveira, Talent Acquisition Manager at Burberry and to alumni Kate Walker and Olivia Shaw for sharing their brilliant CV and job hunting tips at Wednesday’s Finding a Job – Part 1 event.
A full recording of the event is available on the Team channel.
You’ll find a summary of tips below:
Henrique’s top CV and portfolio tips (from my notes):
- Take pride in your CV and portfolio – make it yours
- There is no right or wrong way to make a portfolio
- make sure the person reviewing it can relate to it
- show your creative process through your portfolio, don’t make your portfolio into a Lookbook
- Make opportunities to meet recruiters at events count – leave your mark
- work on your storytelling, be able to tell them about you – prepare and rehearse this story
- Let your personality shine through
- working in a team is important, your personality allows recruiter’s see what you bring to the team
- Know who you are as a creative
- Don’t be everything to please everyone
Other tips from Kate and Olivia included:
- Remember the interview goes both ways – it is also your time to find out about the employer
- Make time for job hunting – some companies will set mini projects as part of the recruitment process so factor time into you schedule in anticipation and start collecting images and inspiration as soon as you submit the application so you have material to get you started
- Your CV and portfolio are a foot in the door, their function is to get you an interview
- Don’t assume the recruiter will know about projects in your portfolio, include your process and be prepared to talk about your work
- Be open minded with where you look for employment opportunities, don’t just focus on specialist recruitment sites when job hunting
- Go to events and network
Recruitment sites for job hunting that were mentioned during the evening:
Instagram and Twitter – follow companies directly
Careers Pages – sign up for alerts from directly from a company/brand website
