What is mentoring and how can it help you?

Mentoring at the University of Brighton is a shared and mutually beneficial experience.

What is mentoring? And why would this be of interest to students?

Mentoring is a unique relationship where a student is matched with a volunteer mentor. The mentor is usually a professional working person who can bring years of knowledge and experience to the table. This relationship is all about the student, and helping them to reach their goals.

Having a mentor can help you:

  • Build confidence
  • Set and achieve your goals and targets
  • Aid your progression and career choices
  • Develop skills such as organisation and time management

Mentors and students aim to meet every 2 weeks over a 4 to 6 month period.

Well how does this work?

After you have registered to have a mentor (you can do so here: https://www.brighton.ac.uk/careers/mentoring/mentoring-application-form.aspx ) staff will meet with you and find out a bit about what you could use support with. They then look to find you the best match. The matches are made taking into account personalities and goals; as this is important in ensuring those matches work well. Students aren’t necessarily matched based on industry; for example an engineering student isn’t necessarily matched with an engineer. However, the art of matching works well and the feedback received is positive.

“My mentor has been accessible, supportive and absolutely integral to my future success” Mentee 2021.

After some initial training for both the mentor and mentee (student) the mentor agrees to meet virtually with the mentee on a fortnightly basis for up to two hours. The time is spent talking, listening, and reflecting. But it differs from match to match and the Mentor will do their best to work with what is best for the student. The relationship lasts for between 4-6 months. There is always support available throughout the match and the outcomes for students are proven to be improved than if they hadn’t of had a mentor.

The University of Brighton is proud to offer this service as part of its support package to students studying here, and would strongly urge any student feeling like they could benefit from a mentor to get in touch today either by registering using the link above or emailing momentum@brighton.ac.uk or calling 01273 644145.
