Exhibition of books for young people with disabilities
Following on from the success of hosting the international children’s book collection back in January, the School of Education’s Curriculum Centre were thrilled to be selected once again to exhibit a second collection of children’s books.
Being one of just four UK institutions chosen alongside Worcester University (at the Hive), the Story Museum (Oxford) and Seven Stories (Newcastle), it was a great privilege to have the IBBY 2015 collection of books for young people with disabilities on display for one week (16-20 May).
The final 50 books that made up the collection were selected from 159 nominations from around the world, and judged to be outstanding recent examples of books for young children to young adults in the following 3 categories:
- Specialised formats – books with sign language, Braille, pictograms, tactile features, and dyslexic-friendly features
- Universal access – books which can be enjoyed by all through features such as larger font and images, age-appropriate concepts portrayed in an easy-to-understand manner, and simplified text
- Portrayals of disability – picture books, fiction and non-fiction portraying young people with disabilities
The exhibition provided staff and student with an exciting opportunity to explore an up-to-date collection of international children’s books, with a specific focus on disability.
