Induction Day 1 Tuesday 12 October, 10.00-15.00

On the morning of Day 1 we have a series of welcome and introductory talks. You’ll learn more about research at the University of Brighton, gain an understanding of the structure of your research degree, and meet key members of academic and administrative staff.

The afternoon programme is more interactive so we recommend being ‘camera-ready’! You’ll have an opportunity to introduce your research to your peers in a session facilitated by Dr Mark Erickson.* Following that, you’ll find out about the range of workshops in our Postgraduate Researcher Development Programme (PRDP) and explore how we can best support your training needs through all stages of your doctorate and for life beyond the PhD. (See below for some key workshop dates in October and November.)

We’ll close the afternoon with a Q&A session but you are very welcome to ask questions throughout the day.

*Preparatory task for Day 1: for our interactive session in the afternoon, please try to have with you an object that represents your research.

Induction Day 2 Wednesday 13 October, 13.00-16.30

We open day 2 at 1pm with a key workshop for new doctoral students, Research Plan Guidance. In this session, you’ll gain insights into how to design and structure a good research plan and complete the first of your doctoral milestones.

Following the workshop, we have series of short talks. You can find out about our library and IT services; support for wellbeing, mental health, disability and dyslexia; teaching opportunities; and the work of Brighton Students’ Union and our PGR Reps.

In-person social event, Tuesday 12 October, 5.30pm+

Booking has now closed for our welcome meal. If you would like to join us, please complete the form below to join our waiting list. We will contact you in the event of any cancellations.

Following the Day 1 induction programme, why not join us at Palm Court Restaurant on Brighton Palace Pier for a traditional seaside meal of fish and chips (vegan/ GF options available)?

Online induction finishes at 15.00 so we hope that will give most of you enough time to travel to the seafront. If you want to attend and have further to travel, you can join online induction from a campus computer suite or PGR study room. Please ask your Research Student Administrator for details (and please ensure you have headphones so you don’t disturb other computer users in the rooms!).

This evening event is a wonderful opportunity to meet your peers in-person and, if you’re new to the area, to check out one of Brighton’s famous and much loved attractions. We’ll pay for your main meal; you’ll just need to pay for any drinks and food extras.
