It’s World Book Day on Thursday 2nd March. This annual event celebrates books and reading, with many students and teachers choosing to dress up as their favourite book characters to mark the occasion. Need ideas for a costume? Have a look to see what other people have chosen in the past here. The World Book Day site also has lots of ideas for you to use including:
A crayon from The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt and Oliver Jeffers
Willy Wonka from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl
Granny from Gangsta Granny by David Walliams
Katniss from The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
If you’re looking for a fun but short activity to do, why not try one of these games with your class?
Or watch one of the many videos on the WBD site including book trailers, short stories read by well-known faces, and tips on creating stories from famous authors and illustrators.
The World Book Day site has also gathered together loads of other ideas into resource packs to help you celebrate on Thursday:
The WBD site has paired up with the wonderful Centre for Literacy in Primary Education (CLPE) to put together The Big Book Off, a set of 20 ideas for celebrating books and reading from Reception to Year 6. Each handy one page idea card is linked to the EYFS and the National Curriculum. Scroll to the bottom of the Big Book Off page and you will also find 5 more ideas designed for Secondary students.
The Book Nook in Hove will be hosting a special Story Time on World Book Day at 4pm with the wonderful Guy Parker-Rees, illustrator of Giraffes Can’t Dance and Twist and Hop: Minibeast Bop.
Tell us your favourite book character and win a book!
And finally, we are running a competition for our students in the Curriculum Centre to win one of these books for World Book Day
Just send us an email ( curriculumcentre@brighton.ac.uk) with the subject line ‘World Book Day competition’ from your university account telling us who your favourite character is and you’ll be put in the draw to win one of the books (they will be assigned randomly). The winning names will be drawn on Friday 3rd March 2017 and will be contacted by email. Best of luck!
