Inspirations: Bauhaus

Bauhaus: Symmetry, Shapes, Simplicity

A key inspiration to me is the work of the Bauhaus School of Design.

Bauhaus is an art movement founded by Walter Gropius in Germany in the early 20th Century.

Bauhaus as an art form gave birth to ‘Gesamtkunstwerk‘; a multi-disciplinary way of viewing the arts… also known within the performing arts as Total Theatre.

The notion of Total Theatre inspires me to break free from the traditional boundaries that:

  • An art piece is either a painting, a drawing or a sculpture.
  • An art piece should be for the public not for the artist.
  • An art piece should be enjoyed by everybody who experiences it.

I have been inspired to flip these boundaries and work outside them to produce work that:

  • Shocks.
  • Is multi disciplinary.
  • Helps me to heal.

The creation of the ‘Triadisches Ballett’ by Oskar Schlemmer was a key moment in the Bauhaus Movement – the world had never seen anything like this before… and neither had I!

Triadic Ballet – 1930

It inspires me to use bold colours, shapes and symmetry and geometry when creating work; focusing on movement and choreography of simple gestures to sound.

A short soundscape work of art I have produced that has been inspired by Bauhaus is presented below:

Soundscape from December 2020.
