Improving access to PrEP in Brighton and Hove: the power of collaborative, place-based service innovation

In this event we highlight innovative new developments that have taken place in providing access to PrEP in Brighton and Hove. Taking PrEP (Pre-exposure Prophylaxis) can prevent HIV transmission. In the city of Brighton and Hove, close collaboration between service users and local partners has led to the development of community and digital pathways to PrEP which raise awareness, inform and provide support for everyone who might benefit from PrEP, whilst ensuring progress toward positive service use experiences for all.

The success we celebrate at this event builds on successive and ongoing research partnerships and funded projects, most notably the EmERGE project consortium (2015-2020). Digital initiatives are led by Dr Jenny Whetham, not-for- profit company EmERGE mHealth Ltd and technology research partners at Universidad Politecnica de Madrid. Community campaigns and service design has been led by Terrence Higgins Trust and the European Aids Treatment Group. The University of Brighton has provided research leadership for this program of work since 2013 and its ongoing Access to Care partnership is supported by its Centre for Digital Media Cultures and Centre for Transforming Sexuality and Gender. The anchor organisation and innovation driver for this event is University Hospitals Sussex NHS Trust and their specialist HIV services based at the Lawson Unit, where healthcare staff continue to take forward the outstanding achievements of Professor Martin Fisher, working closely with the Martin Fisher Foundation
