This participatory workshop will discuss the viability of/alternatives to the term “at-risk” as a conceptual framework for generating empowering performance modalities for youth and  introduce the case study of theatre as juvenile restorative justice in Faulkner County Arkansas. Frank will take participants through the same core series of Theatre of the Oppressed-based trust-building and improvisation exercises used in this case study, before providing an opportunity for participants to imagine a theatre-based plan of action for their own work. No theatre experience necessary.

About the Facilitator:

Prof Adam Frank is an anthropologist and theatre artist based at the Schedler Honors College of the University of Central Arkansas.  A 40-year SAG-AFTRA member, his professional theatre credits include seven seasons with Arkansas Shakespeare Theatre and regional theatre work in Austin, Tucson, and Los Angeles.  He is the founding Artistic Director of Ozark Living Newspaper Theatre Company, a social-justice oriented theatre company in Arkansas. Adam’s scholarly work includes two ethnographies, ‘Taijiquan and the Search for the Little Old Chinese Man: Understanding Identity through Martial Arts’ and ‘Breath, Wind, Mind: Explorations of Qi’ (with Nancy Chen and Stephen Field). Adam has presented workshops on improvisational theatre for social change and healing throughout North America and beyond.
