A roundtable in association with the Goodbye Breasts! Exhibition.
The arts and health are currently facing great challenges, and the pressure for meaningful dialogue and partnership has intensified. In the context of an art exhibition about breast cancer and recovery, we wish to explore the possibilities for creative thinking and mutual goals. How can we create work together in a spirit of social justice that values individual experience and seeks to inspire change?
This roundtable brings together artists, patients, charities, medical professionals, academics, health advocates and the public to debate the issues. It is a collaboration between the Centre for Arts and Well-Being, University of Brighton and the School of Media, Arts and Humanities at the University of Sussex.
Context
The UK government’s 10 year Women’s Health Strategy launched in August 2022 focuses on improving health outcomes for women throughout their lifetime, recognising the role of ‘Women’s Voices’. Goodbye Breasts! is a creative intervention into this space with the touring Big Breast providing a highly visible symbol related to women’s health. The project seeks to bring people of all ages and backgrounds into the discussion, providing an alternative way to hear voices.
Goodbye Breasts! Exhibition at The Dance Space Brighton, will be open to public on the same day for drop in visits and from 24-28 October. Check the website for more details.
What is Goodbye Breasts!?
Goodbye Breasts! Is an art and film project aiming to create conversations about breast cancer and recovery. It is presented as an installation and a documentary film. It is led by Joanna Callaghan who explores breast cancer through her own personal story and other’s stories. As part of this journey, she undertakes to create a giant inflatable breast, to raise awareness of breast health and highlight the healing powers of creativity in recovery.
