First steps into the wild: Year one ecology field trip to Preston Montford

Starting university is a big moment and at the University of Brighton, students on our Ecology and Conservation BSc(Hons) course, kick off their journey with boots on the ground and binoculars in hand.

The first-year field trip to FSC Preston Montford is more than just an introduction to ecological fieldwork, it’s a chance to build friendships, explore nature, and begin developing the skills that will shape your future career.

Exploring Stiperstones National Nature Reserve

Last year’s cohort headed to the Stiperstones National Nature Reserve, a stunning upland heathland in Shropshire. Though the mist and fog obscured the famous views from the Devil’s Chair, the atmospheric conditions added a magical touch to the landscape.

Students tackled the steep climb with enthusiasm, conducting ecological surveys and learning to identify key species in a new environment. It was a hands-on introduction to field sampling and ecological observation.

Building skills and confidence

Throughout the trip, students practiced:

  • Bird identification through point counts and quizzes led by Connor, a favourite among the group.
  • Invertebrate sampling from leaf litter, learning how to sort and classify species.
  • Ecological surveying techniques that form the foundation of future fieldwork modules.

These activities help students develop practical skills that are essential for careers in conservation, ecological consultancy, and environmental research.

Forging friendships and finding passion

Beyond the science, the trip is a social highlight. It’s where many students meet their future lab partners, project teammates, and lifelong friends.

Rachel White, Course Leader said:

“This trip is always a joy to run and it is such a treat to see how friendships are forged between ecological enthusiasts.”
