“My degree has led me to a career in one of the top pharmaceutical and diagnostic companies in the world and I couldn’t be more grateful for the opportunities and support I received.”
Navigating life after university can feel daunting, but for one biological sciences graduate, a single career talk sparked a journey that led to a fulfilling role at one of the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies.
In this blog, we hear graduate, Ogochukwu Meniru’s personal experience of what inspired her to follow a career path into science communications.
Discovering a new path through a career talk
“When I first began my biological sciences degree at the University of Brighton, I wasn’t entirely sure where my science background would take me. Like many students, I felt a mix of excitement and uncertainty about what lay ahead after graduation. But everything changed during a university career talk that featured graduates from Roche. Their stories and insights into the graduate scheme opened my eyes to the world of science communication, a field that immediately resonated with my strengths and interests.”
Landing a job before graduation
“Inspired by the Roche graduates, I began applying to several science communication roles, including Roche, and to my delight I received an offer from them before I’d even graduated! It was an incredible feeling, especially after the uncertainty I had felt about life after university.”
How Brighton’s placement team made a difference
“A huge part of this success was thanks to the placement year team at Brighton. In my second year, their support in preparing for placement applications helped me develop essential skills in CV writing, job applications, and interviews. These skills proved invaluable when I transitioned to applying for graduate roles. With their guidance, I even reached the final interview stage at Pfizer. Although I didn’t get the role, the feedback I received helped me refine my approach and ultimately secure the offer from Roche. That progression is a testament to how effective the placement team’s support was in setting me up for success.”
Starting a career at Roche in science communication
“I’ve now started my role at Roche, and it’s been an incredibly exciting journey so far. I work in bid writing, a niche but expansive and rewarding area of science communication. Every day, I get to apply the skills I developed at university in a whole new environment, while continuing to grow and gain new ones.
