From exploring the stunning landscapes of places such as Wales and Sicily to collaborating with peers in the lab, the University of Brighton’s Environmental Sciences BSc course offers you the opportunity to turn your passion for the environment into real-world action.
Students here don’t just study the environment – they experience it firsthand, through field trips, lab work, creative assessments and an optional industry placement year that helps them build their academic and practical skills.
We caught up with one of our current BSc Environmental Sciences students Josh who shared his top 10 reasons why this course stands out so you can see all of the incredible opportunities you’ll have as a Brighton student.
1) The year 2 trip to Sicily
“A week which is filled with fieldwork and analysis surrounding: Water quality, Geomorphology and archaeological features in Sicily. It really helps that the trip is to a gorgeous location and part of the world!”
2) Hands-on lab work
“The opportunities to engage in lab work for my environmental pollution module, looking at the pollution levels in the discharge of sewage treatment plants at different stages of water treatment. Working with lab-based processes to a specification.”
3) Abundance of local landmarks
“Living in Brighton means we are really close to gorgeous landmarks such as the Seven sisters which makes a very enjoyable hike and also an opportunity to take in the beautiful geomorphology and topography of the cliffs.”
4) Access to high-tech equipment
“Being able to use high tech equipment such as the TemTop air quality monitoring equipment in my Environmental pollution module.”
5) Exploring different processes in the lab
“For example, using agar plates and using E.coli gel bag tests to measure E.coli levels in bathing water.”
6) Day trips
“We were able to visit the gorgeous sea life centre as a part of the Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems module, which allowed me to look at a variety of organisms even bioluminescent krill.”
7) Developing an analytical eye
“University gives you a sense of freedom and want to explore the world. I travelled to Norway in year 2 with my mate during the Christmas break and it felt like my degree gave me more of an analytical eye and allowed me to appreciate the surroundings more.”
8) Variety of assessment styles
“There are different ways of assessing progress in modules. For example, whilst away in Sicily we got to collaborate as a part of small groups to create a poster presentation which allowed us to be creative whilst also being academic.”
9) Inclusive and supportive environment
“The University of Brighton is incredibly supportive of differences and issues that may arise which could affect your studies, especially with disabilities and health conditions.”
10) Collaboration opportunities
“The opportunity to collaborate with other peers and work together on projects. This was especially true in Sicily where it gave us the opportunity to connect with peers that we may not have connected with before.”
