A School for Malagiri – recent fundraising

Recently, members of the Malagiri committee have been busy organising fundraising events to support the Malagiri school.

Please see below an update on these recent fundraising activities written by Lorraine Harrison.

PANGDEAN BIRTHDAY PARTY

On 4 November 2021, Jill Munday (a member of the Malagiri Committee) organised a fund-raising event at Pangdean Barn to celebrate the school’s 10th anniversary. 100 friends, supporters and School of Education colleagues attended the event. The committee was especially pleased to welcome Cathy Gower (Dean of the School of Education), together with four undergraduate students.

Just over £4,500 was raised. This is an outstanding amount and is the most that has ever been achieved at a single event. It means that almost one third of the school’s annual costs have been met.

CHRISTMAS FAIR

On 8 December 2021, Pippa Totraku and Susie Negus (SoE colleagues and members of the Malagiri committee), pictured below, organised a Christmas Fair that was held outside the Checkland Building at Falmer.

Staff and students entered into the festive spirit, wore Christmas jumpers, purchased seasonal goodies, enjoyed eating cakes and savoury bites and were serenaded by a choir (formed especially for the occasion). £600 was raised  – a wonderful effort from everyone who supported this event. Special thanks to those students who created some unique (and rather yummy) Christmas gifts to sell.

INDIVIDUAL INITIATIVES

During August 2021, Kevin Fossey’s daughter Michelle and her son Benji walked the entire length of the South Downs Way  – a remarkable achievement, especially as Benji was 7 years old at the time. They raised an amazing £670 for the Malagiri school.

From 1 January 2021 onwards, Lorraine Harrison (member of the Malagiri committee) has been recording the distance she has walked on a monthly basis and has donated £1 for every 10KM covered. So far, she has walked a total of 2, 417KM (1,512 miles) and raised £241.

EVERY PENNY COUNTS

A huge thank you to everyone who supports the Malagiri school. Every donation makes a life-changing difference to a child and a donation of £5 will cover the cost of one child’s schooling for a week.
