“Pros and cons lists are your BEST FRIENDS!! No matter how small the cons or how big the pros, weigh them all out anyway. University is a personal experience, so make sure you’re picking choices with yourself in mind.”
Why did you choose media studies at Brighton over other courses – what was it that really stoked your interest?
“I really appreciated the variety in the course. Other courses felt very specialised and boxed in, and I realised I needed a course that gave me the opportunity to figure out what I wanted to pursue in my own time. I’ve also always loved Brighton as a city, so that helped too.
You’ve only just landed in Brighton, what’s it been like living here so far?
“Just about everything I could’ve hoped for. When you visit Brighton as a tourist, it never feels like enough time, but living here allows me to enjoy such a vibrant city, explore every side street, laugh at everyone getting dive-bombed by seagulls, and be able to go home and do it over again the next day. It’s a lovely place and the people here definitely make it so.
About you… who is Red, what does she love to do?
“Big question! I mostly enjoy spending time with my friends, laughing too hard, watching my favourite movies. I love listening to music on the bus and buying (way too expensive!) coffee in town. I also recently joined sign language society, and I’m really enjoying that too.”
What are you most excited about for the next few years of uni?
“I’m really looking forward to some fascinating, niche modules. I want to try all sorts of new skills, figure out what parts of media really spark my interest, and generally squeeze all the education I can out of the university!”
Hopes and dreams… do you have specific career aspirations (it’s fine to just be enjoying the journey btw!)?
“No big master plan yet. Maybe something in film, I’ve always enjoyed learning about it and would love to give it a try.”
A new student is browsing uni websites not sure what to do – what would be your first year words of wisdom for this time in life?
“Pro con lists are your BEST FRIENDS!! No matter how small the cons or how big the pros, weigh them all out anyway. University is a personal experience, so make sure you’re picking choices with yourself in mind. And there is no shame in realising something isn’t working for you; there’s plenty of time to figure out what you want.”
Anything else you want to share?
“Take every university opportunity and experience with both hands! Even if it’s terrifying and if you end up hating it, it’s another clue to help you figure out what you do love. Also, no matter how much you tell yourself you won’t resort to eating pot noodles, you’re lying.”
