University of Brighton fashion graduates are putting their collections on display in the 2020 Graduate Fashion Week
The Graduate Fashion Foundation’s (GFF) showroom set-up at Coal Drops Yard in King’s Cross allows visitors and industry experts to explore the best and brightest new talent from universities, with 300 diverse looks from 150 design graduates.
Alongside the showroom is the GFF Exhibition, which runs publicly until Sunday at Samsung KX at Coal Drops Yard and a catwalk show at the same venue on Tuesday 22 September at 6pm, which precedes the GFF Award Show.
Ella Hall (Fashion Design with Business Studies) will collect her Accessories Award, sponsored by YKK, on Tuesday evening. Ella saw off competition for her ability to bring a modern and directional approach to accessories. Among the other graduates exhibiting work is Fia Jacobs, who studied the same course as Ella and is inspired by the likes of Tim Burton, Alexander McQueen and Tim Walker and describes her practice and style as ‘predominantly dark, weird and wonderful’. Fia previously worked on pieces for singer Nicki Minaj’s opening world tour.
All graduates exhibiting their collections completed their studies despite the challenges which were presented by Covid-19, when studio spaces were out of use due to the national lockdown.
The GFF events coincide with London Fashion Week, which for the first time includes a film showcasing the work of graduates to a wider audience. Four Brighton graduates, Ella Hall, Sarah-Louise Koessler, Flora Nisbet and Dani Mayfield, all feature in the video.
Craig Higgins, Fashion course leader, said: “It is fantastic that GFF is still able to offer Fashion graduates the opportunity to showcase their collections to the industry, despite the hardships and disappointments experienced by all this year as a result of Covid-19.
“The collections on show area a true testament to their hard work, resilience and determination. It has been challenging for everyone involved, but the creativity shown by these graduates is evident in the fantastic outcomes on show across the platforms.
“I wish all the graduates from this exceptional class of 2020 the very best of luck with their future careers.
