Calling all filmmakers

The annual David Thomas Awards are open for entries.

The awards are a collection of prizes, screening events and workshops supporting emerging Brighton filmmakers in memory of an exceptional student and filmmaker, David Thomas, who passed away in 2013. They aim to help graduating students from The University of Brighton bridge the gap between education and industry, while also supporting young filmmakers already working in the city.

David ThomasDavid was a Brighton based filmmaker and University of Brighton alumnus who graduated in 2011 with a 1st Class Honours degree in English and Media.  He went on to build a successful career for himself straight out of University at various production companies in London and Brighton.

There are three prizes – one for a current student in the School of Humanites, one for a graduating student from the University of Brighton and another for a filmmaker with strong links with Brighton.

David Thomas Student Filmmaker Prize – The David Thomas Student Filmmaker Prize is open to any School of Humanities students at the Uni of Brighton who has made a film as part of their degree. The winner will receive £250 in prize money and a complimentary hire at The Brighton Studio worth £380.
David Thomas Progress Mentorship Prize – This prize is open to any student in their graduating year from the University of Brighton. It allows students to direct a short film over the course of the following year with the full production support of The Progress Film Company.
David Thomas Emerging Filmmaker Prize – This prize is open to any filmmaker with a strong link to brighton who has completed their short film whilst under the age of 27. The winner will be decided by audience vote at the David Thomas Awards screening. The winner will receive a £250 cash prize as well as a Promotion Hire voucher worth £250.

Applications close on May 1 and prizes will be awarded on May 30.
