Graduates 2024: Xiao Yang: Sequential Design and Illustration MA

“Every tutor of sequence design and illustration is great. They have opened a door for me from different angles in the field of illustration. As long as you are willing, you can explore as much as you want!”

Please tell us a bit about your work and your influences

I often use deconstructionism to show the connection between people and things. Before studying for my master’s degree, I was a brand designer, providing animation and illustration services for different companies.

Can you tell us a bit about what brought you to doing a postgraduate degree and this course in particular?

Sequential design allows me to find a good balance between illustration and animation. I can use the techniques I learned in animation to make some experimental sequential illustrations.

Can you tell us about your favourite part of your studies and how it helped the development of you and your practice.

My favourite part of this course is definitely the various workshops, especially the book arts workshop. Although my handicraft is very poor, teacher Helen always does her best to help me, which really helps me a lot!

Were there any staff who particularly inspired you?

Every tutor of sequence design and illustration is great. They have opened a door for me from different angles in the field of illustration. As long as you are willing, you can explore as much as you want!

What does Brighton mean to you now?

Brighton is such a special place for me now, I spent a happy postgraduate time here, it was also my first place in the UK, and I believe it will also be the starting point of a new stage in my future

What are your plans after graduation?

After graduation, I hope to explore more in the field of illustration, including more integration with animation production.

Finally what would you say to anyone considering post-graduate study?

There are many opportunities, but time is limited. Don’t regret any choice you make. Now is the best time.
