As we launch a Content Creation BA course, we ask co-course leader Emma Collins to break it down for us…
Hi Emma, we’re so excited to launch this new School of Art & Media course, and wanted to delve a bit deeper into why this is the course to do right now. So…
What is content creation?
“With the introduction, evolution and development of social media, a space has opened up for creatives to entertain, inform and engage people on social media platforms.
“This is content creation and it is now recognised as a creative skill set (separate from influencing which is specifically about selling products) that utilises visual storytelling through a variety of mediums.”
What do you do as a content creator?
“Firstly you have to develop the art of making engaging imagery and film for digital platforms, through a variety of mediums like photography, illustration, animation and AI – the creative opportunities are almost infinite. It just needs to have a strong aesthetic quality, be original and authentic.
“Secondly you have to understand how to connect with and create alongside a social media community. By understanding how both these things work together you can create truly successful content.”
How and where does content creation currently fit in industry?
“Social media is a hungry beast and with most organisations, companies and individuals looking to connect with audiences and communities, there is a growing need for creatives to step in to create high quality, engaging content. This crosses from fashion to engineering, politics to not-for-profit.
“There is such a broad spectrum, you can find the thing you are interested in and use your creativity to develop your unique visual storytelling style.”
What are the skills you need?
“You need to be creative, imaginative and willing to test and try new ways of making imagery, whether it’s digital, analogue or a mixture of both.
“As digital platforms constantly shift and change you need to keep your eyes open and have a hunch for what’s coming next. You also need to be in touch with the zeitgeist and have a feeling for how culture and society is evolving and moving. It’s an exciting space to be in!”
