The York Gallery: The Lumber Room

Earlier this month I went to York for a little day trip and visited the York Gallery. It was my first time visiting the Gallery as it has been closed for a while.

I was really excited to go as I’ve heard that Mark Hearld had curated a room called ‘The Lumber Room: Unimagined Treasures’

in the gallery and I really like his work so I thought it would be interesting to see what his mind is like by seeing his curated exhibition. And it was truly fascinating! It was like stepping into his own little world, with bright red wallpaper, doll houses and taxidermy animals everywhere. There was a growing feeling of nostalgia while walking through the room.

I first heard to Mark Hearld while I was in College in Hull. He used to give lessons there at the time and we had a talk by him once. I was instantly interested in his work and have been a fan ever since.

I felt extremely inspired after visiting his exhibition and I can’t wait to go back!

“Since I heard Saki’s story I have always been intrigued by the idea of a locked room that contained treasures so wonderful they are beyond what your mind can imagine. In this exhibition I wanted to create the sense of excitement and wonder that you get when you discover the key to the room and see the “forbidden” objects for the first time.” (Mark Hearld about The Lumber Room story by Saki)
