DO HO SUH

PASSAGE/S

“I see life as a passageway, with no fixed beginning or destination. We tend to focus on the destination all the time and forget about the in-between spaces.”

Born in 1962 in South Korea, Do Ho Suh received a BFA in painting from the Rhode Island School of Design and a MFA in sculpture from Yale University. He currently lives and works in London.

Those real size see-through fabric structure create something un-realsitic atmosphere. However, since I have got similar experience with him, born in Korea and spent parts of my life both in Korea and the UK, all of those structures seems really familiar with me.

I always thought that there is a huge difference between the houses of Korea and those of the UK, but surprisingly, it was quite hard to divide the structures he made into that of two different countries if there is no obvious features, like the letters, traditional frames and so on.

I couldn’t even imagine this could be realised? How could he make those threads into 3D structures?

I think this also related with my current project about memory, because it provoked nostalgic-kind of thing for me. My Home/s, a film depicts a journey, vertically and horizontally walks through a apartment and the roads with his daughter, reminded me of that similar experience with my dad.

I really wanted to grab the door handle and do that open and close thing!
