This film is based on the book ‘Miss Peregrin’s Home for Peculiar Children’ by Ransom Riggs.

After grandfather’s mysterious death, Jake found out that all the stories that he had been told by his grandfather were true, not fairy tales. However, his parents thought he was mad so following the advice of his psychiatrist, Jake and his father travel to Wales, where Miss Peregrine was supposed to be living.

Jake met those peculiar children there and they took Jake into their “loop”. Miss Peregrin was “Ymbrynes”, who can transform into a bird and have the power to create a safe world using the “loop” to  protect those children. Jake were fascinated by Emma, who was lighter than air and could control the air. Jake has been told that he was a Peculiar as well, like his grandfather, he could see invisible monsters called Hollows.

Hollows was supposed to eat eyeballs to turn into human forms. After series of fights with hollows, Jake went to another loop to find his grandfather then went back to Emma, as they knew they loved each other, and Miss Peregrin left for making another loop to live with peculiar children.

This film is full of fantastic imagination. The original texted magical world turn into real life under Tim Burton’s directing. compared to his other films, like “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”, this film felt less colourful and vibrant, however it was still attractive enough to allure audience.

I love his ability of showing those cruel scenes with cuteness. One of the most successful film using this ability was “The Nightmare Before Christmas”. It is a pity that he doesn’t film any animations now, because I am a big fan of his own wicked characters. However, I do love his movies with real people as well, so I am really looking forward to seeing his next work.
