SHADOW
SUZY LEE
She is a picture book and book artist currently living and working in Seoul, Korea.
She graduated form Seoul National University with a BFA in Painting and then finished her MA in Book Arts, Camberwell College of Arts.
‘Shadow’
‘Mirror’ (Corraini, 2003)
‘Wave’ (Chronicle Books, 2008)
She tried different ways in physical elements of the book, as she thinks the physical elements of the book are part of the story itself in some of her books…
For example, this book, ‘Shadow’, is horizontal and opens from bottom to top. This elements made the shadow drawings to look more like shadows. I think this can be related to my current project about photography using different types of lights.
She used different platforms in her other books, ‘Mirror’ is vertical and opens to the side.’Wave’ is horizontal and opens to the side.
These two books, ‘Mirror’ and ‘Wave’ have same idea, the centre binding of each books works as a border between fantasy and reality.
The concept of showing real and imaginary world at the same time through shadows worked so well. It intrigues the readers and makes them to think more, even using their own imaginary worlds.
Another thing I liked about this book is that there is no words. It is a pure picture book. As I think the illustration is another type of language, another tool of communicating, this book is the ideal version of my thoughts.
Suzy had an exhibition recently in Korea, and she made ‘My Shadow Theatre’. The audience can play on the screen with their own shadow puppets.
The book and the exhibition were well-designed for interacting with audience.
