HOUSE OF DAGMAR. INITIAL CONCEPT STARTER

My project started off by me already knowing what my shoot was going to be like and how I was going to style my model. This all came about when I found these photos from house of Dagmars instagram (a clothing brand) I fell in love with the back drop and the styling. For my first photoshoot I was trying to find a backdrop similar to this, but it proved hard. Instead I used a white sheet and draped it in the garden all inspired from these photos as the curtains are draped down in the background. My styling wasn’t similar, but I did style a simple black suit to work with the run down crazy garden.

Rihanna

These photos printed out blurry in my sketchbook. But I wanted to talk about why I included these in my sketchbook. Rihanna is such an idol to many people, girls look up to her. I love the fact that she showed you can wear clothing such as the one of her in the oversized baggy suit that aren’t specifically designed for womenswear, but more for menswear. I included these photos for clothing inspiration and I love the colour of the backdrop. Really makes the photo pop

JULIA GROSSI

I came across these set of photos by Julia Grossi, she wrote “Where does the female begin? Where does the male end? Clear gender distinction and strong opposing definitions of the sexes belong in the past. The line of segregation is blurrier than ever. Yet the discussion about how far men and woman can push the freedom of self expression is about aesthetic sensuality regardless of gender” I really like this, I thought it really related to looking at female masculinity/menswear inspired clothing on women. It’s important to talk about this topic, we shouldn’t feel scared to be who we are or wear what we want based on our gender. In my opinion, I feel that it’s more normal for females to wear whats seen as male clothing then for males to wear ‘female’ clothing.

styling research

These photos are just for styling inspiration purposes. Thomas Giddings showing ‘female masculinity’ in his photos with the models being dressed in menswear inspired clothing. Suits, shirts, polo necks all with hints of femininity like the tights, the skirt and heels the jewellery etc.

FASHION WEEK CLOTHING INSPIRATION

I realised that menswear inspired clothing is very popular as proven by the street style photos from London, Paris and New York fashion week. Everyones wearing oversized suits mixed with an element of female clothing. Here on I decided to call it ‘Female Masculinity’ as I want to focus on women in menswear clothing in particular as my model is female.

VETEMENTS

As i’m looking further into menswear inspired clothing, I’ve started to look at gender fluidity on the runway. I’m trying to show that gender no longer dictates what we wear. I love vestments clothing, the oversized menswear look really inspires me and my ideas of styling for the first shoot.

PUBLIC SCHOOL FALL 2017

Public school’s fall 2017 was a good reference for menswear inspired clothing. Oversized suits, baggy jumpers, dark colours and chunky trainers. At this point, I don’t have much of an idea where my project is going. I’m focusing on my styling as I know how I want my first photoshoot to turn out.
