I decided to focus my Tell Us About It project on the Berlin Wall because I am specifically interested in its political significance and impact on the citizens of both West and East Germany. It only came down 10 years before I was born, and reminds me that although in school history felt very far in the past it is actually very relevant and recent. Change is always happening, and history is always being written. I find the contrast between Capitalist and Communist ideologies and how both are interpreted differently in different governments very interesting. We build our views and perspective through what we are exposed to and our understanding of the world is greatly impacted by the system of government we experience.

Berlin may look modern and united from a surface perspective but the reminders of its dark and divided history are preserved in Museums, parts of the Berlin Wall and monuments to those who suffered. It is rare to see such a concentration of political history in one city. Post-war Europe was a huge time of change, and it is often a topic of our CCS lectures because art movements and a complete overhaul in modern life have come out of this turbulent time in history. It is an area I am greatly interested in, and I love that this project is not the end of my research, but something I will continue to build upon and learn more about. Continually expanding my perspective and building an understanding of historical influence in today’s world.

Zine Tell us about it – PDF format

Below are the pages of my zine as jpegs (just in case the PDF is too slow to load). The format printed would be landscape double-page landscape spreads. It is a slightly strange format, but one I get along well within my sketchbooks and when laying out pages. This format is more ideal for printing than viewing on a screen, but I didn’t want to divide the double-page spreads.
