My friend Jake Bussell ran his first live draw along workshop on YouTube yesterday. He normally runs life drawing classes and teaches drawing, so because of the lockdown he decided to start a weekly online live stream to inspire his students and subscribers to keep drawing.
The first 5 poses were 2 minute drawings, followed by a 5 minute, 10 minute and 15 minute pose. I love life drawing but don’t particularly enjoy copy images directly, so decided that even though they are life drawing poses it would be fun to use my more illustrative style. I refined the lines after the workshop, and I used Posca pens on watercolour paper so I can use watercolours and turn them into more finished images. I love how expressive the reference drawings were, and the energy in the 2 minute drawings.
I did the final 25-minute pose in charcoal on watercolour paper, which created a really cool texture. I actually stopped drawing with 10 mins left because I like the place the drawing had got to and didn’t want to overwork the drawing.
It was so much fun and I’m looking forward to next week! 🙂
Update: I did Jake’s lockdown life drawing consistently for 7 weeks, every Tuesday evening. It has really helped me to keep structure and continue to develop my figure drawing. More recently I haven’t been taking part as I’ve been focusing on my uni deadline. Some of my drawings are in my sketchbook, whilst I drew others on watercolour paper. I do plan to add watercolour to more of my drawings but this will happen over summer. Below are all the drawings from Lockdown Lifedrawing (minus those that are in my concertina sketchbook).
