Week 8: Computer Controlled Machining, Moulding and Casting

For this week, our task for was to create a 30x30x5 mini tile and generate a toolpath to cut it out of a solid block (50x50x10mm) using a 3mm flat or ball nose end mill.

To start things off, I opened up Fusion 360 and drew a basic square measuring the size we were instructed to use. Once the basic square was made, I then made it 3D by extruding it upwards and then I fillet the sides to give it a clean look. For a little personal touch, I added my initials to one of the sides of the square.

Next I clicked on Setup which brought up a small bar on the right of the screen. Next I needed to to select the Stock option which then I needed to make sure the width, depth and height was 50x50x10mm.

I also had to make sure that the stock side offset is 10mm, the stock top offset is 3mm and the stock bottom offset is 2mm.

For the setup post process, it was next to name the Program name/number to ‘CNC-tile-30x30x5-derekcovill-pink-foam’.
